the peace of wild things–comforting words for days like today

The Peace of Wild Thingsducks on lake

When despair for the world grows in me
and I wake in the night at the least sound
in fear of what my life and my children’s lives may be,
I go and lie down where the wood drake
rests in his beauty on the water, and the great heron feeds.
I come into the peace of wild things
who do not tax their lives with forethought
of grief. I come into the presence of still water.
And I feel above me the day-blind stars
waiting with their light. For a time
I rest in the grace of the world, and am free.

  1. I just shared a post on consumerism with a quote and a partial poem from Wendell Berry and I’m browsing the blogosphere looking for other Berry fans.

I like what you have going here. My family lives on 7 1/2 acres and they are doing a good bit of homesteading themselves. I respect and admire the effort, but find myself more at home in a one bedroom apartment curled up with my laptop (where I don’t even have to mow my grass).

Thanks for your efforts and the inspiration.
